Secretary General of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Norris Witter, says that as the global economic situation worsens, many other governments are going to take positions not dissimilar to what the government of Barbados is doing.
Witter’s comments are based on the Guyana Consulate in Barbados, reporting that since the announcement of a new immigration policy, many Guyanese are being picked on, some solely based on appearance, and there are reports now that their push to legalise their status in the country is being deliberately delayed.
In addition, there are reports that the Barbados Police Force has been raiding the residence of Guyanese at nights under the pretext of picking up suspected illegal immigrants.
These allegations come following the announcement by Barbados’ Prime Minister Thompson, that by year end, all undocumented immigrants on the island would be deported.
According to Witter, while so much is being said about what is going on in Barbados in terms of the government’s intention to deport, there are situations in other islands that are not too dissimilar.
“…What you’re going to find is that very shortly, there will be an influx of Guyanese not only from Barbados but also from St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad and further afield.”
Witter added that it is about time that the Government of Guyana start taking responsibility for the welfare and well-being of its people.
“But I think that we as a people have a greater responsibility because if we are satisfied that the government is not doing what they were elected to do, then the people must take the necessary course of action to ensure that we have a government that will respond to the needs of its people.”
According to Witter, the reason for the large influx of Guyanese to foreign countries and islands is public knowledge. “People are basically voting with their feet. Guyana has reached to a point, particularly where the young people are concerned about hopelessness.”
He also stated that what is of concern and ought to be of concern to every single Guyanese, is that Guyanese are so desperate to leave Guyana that they are using every opportunity that is provided, regardless of the risks.
“So people are not leaving because they want to go on holiday or because it is good for them to leave, they are leaving because they see no hope , no future in Guyana.”
