Two male guards have been deployed to the Uncle Eddie’s Home in the wake of Wednesday’s brutal murder of R.K Security Service guard, Simone Coleridge.
An official from the nursing home said that the guards are from another security firm.
According to the official, the management of R.K’s had explained that the firm was unable to provide male staff, since females make up the majority of R.K’s security personnel.
Explaining why male guards were not deployed in the first place, the official stated that there had been problems in the past with male security personnel who had worked at the institution.
The source did not elaborate.
But the official feels that the gender of security personnel is not the primary issue, but the fact that persons seemed to have lost respect for institutions for the elderly.
“It’s unfortunate and very painful that we are growing up in a society where there is no regard for the elderly.”
The source added that while staff and the inmates are still traumatized over the killing, they are trying to cope.
Simone Coleridge’s violated body was found at around 02:00 hours in the lobby of the benevolent home.
The security guard who resided at Queen Street, Rosemary Lane (Tiger Bay) was apparently strangled.
Her mouth was taped, her hands tied behind her back and both feet were bound by the thieves who escaped with a small refrigerator, a microwave oven and a television set in what appeared to be a vengeful attack.
Police have since recovered the items, which were stashed at a location across the road from the home.
Kaieteur News understands that police had questioned at least one man from the nearby East La Penitence squatting community on Wednesday, but subsequently released him.
Kaieteur News was told that the bandits gained entry by unscrewing a section of a northern door. It is believed that after severing the telephone lines, they immediately confronted Coleridge, who was sitting in the eastern section of the home.
However, contrary to earlier reports, officials said that none of the rooms were ransacked.
An official said that a night nurse, who was in her room, realised that intruders were on the premises and pushed open her door.
The official also mentioned that the bandits apparently heard the door being opened and fled, taking the refrigerator and other items.
Another employee at the home told the media that the institution has had its fair share of breakages over the past years and Coleridge had at least one confrontation with thieves who had broken into the premises.
