Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith appointed Manager
The most experienced player on the current ‘Golden Jaguars’ roster, Howard Lowe has been appointed Captain of the team for the upcoming Bi Annual Parbo Beer Cup set for Suriname, next week.
Lowe replaces another defender and long time buddy Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard who is currently playing with T&T Pro League side Neal & Massey Caledonia AIA.
The two have given outstanding service to Guyana over the years from the junior level to the senior ranks. Lowe brings a lot of experience to this post and will be a tower of strength to the many young players on the side, as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) focuses on the rebuilding of the team. A number of other senior players playing in Trinidad and further afield were not considered for this tour due to their overseas commitments.
Another experienced individual in Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith has been appointed Manager of the team, taking over from Raul Adams who managed the team during its glory years.
Griffith brings a wealth of knowledge to the table with his first stint in a similar position back in 2002 with the seniors in Trinidad and Curacao and Assistant Manager in 2005 in Barbados. He also managed Futsal, senior and juniors teams over the years.
The ‘Golden Jaguars’ will leave Guyana for Suriname on Monday and their first game is set for Wednesday evening against Antigua and Barbuda, at the Andra Kampervene Stadium. This game will take on the status of a grudge match, since the Antiguans defeated Guyana in the Digicel Championships last November in T&T.
Suriname oppose French Guiana at 21:00 hrs on Wednesday in the feature game. Two days later, Guyana come up against Suriname in the feature clash with Antigua facing French Guiana in the opening game.
On Sunday (June 7) Guyana will tackle French Guiana at 17:00hrs and in the final game Suriname will oppose Antigua at 19:00hrs.
Paul James is the head coach, with Billal Nantambu and Gavin Brown (goalkeepers) the assistants. Cuban trained Lindley Langhorne is the physiotherapist.
Meanwhile the team has intensified preparations with sessions conducted at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Thomas Lands twice daily.
Goalkeeper Ronson Williams of Alpha United and defender Randy Small of Linden have been drafted into the squad while Santos midfielder Glenorvan Edmonds and Berbician Adrian Adams have both opted out due to school commitments.
Another Berbician, Kurt Bristol withdrew from the squad because of an injury, Dwight Peters was sent home after he turned up to join the camp days after it commenced. The players were all informed via letter from the GFF that the camp would have been commencing on Friday May 22nd, but Peters showed up four days late and reported to no one about his inability to turn up on time, opting instead to show up at the training venue.
His excuse was that he did not know and he did open the letter, on hearing this, the coaching staff immediately dismissed him from the camp.
At present 24 players are attending the training session, the final 20-man squad will be selected tomorrow.
