The acquisition of a house lot is no longer a tedious task. Measures have been put in place to completely automate the house lot distribution system at the Ministry of Housing and Water.
Several house lot owners have testified to this development. In the past, the Ministry’s Brickdam office would have been flocked by several applicants seeking to be allocated a house lot.
According to Minister Irfaan Ali, the development occurred after it was recognised that in modern management, whether Government or privately controlled, that there should be a reduced time and cost of doing business.
“Instead of putting the applications into a box and having to wait three months for them to be entered into a system, then six months for acknowledgement, another six months for a call for an interview, all of this can now be done the same day,” the Minister revealed.
With the automated system, Ali said, a citizen can simply walk off the road into the Ministry’s office and fill the house lot application form after which they can go directly to a front desk staff who will immediately process the information detailed on the form.
And once the applicant is able to provide all of the relevant information, the Minister said, that they would be interviewed forthwith.
“As it is now, you only get one letter from us. You only have to come to the Ministry one time and after that you just wait on our call for the allocation,” Ali emphasised.
According to him, although the Ministry has distributed in excess of 79,000 house lots since 1992, it is still faced with a backlog, which he attributed to a change in societal philosophy.
He pointed to the fact that about 20 years ago, young adults were satisfied to live in the same house with their parents, adding that persons as young as 18 now prefer to own their own home.
“More young people are owning their own homes; professionals are trying to get their own homes too, so there is greater equity being created as well as greater spending,” the Minister highlighted.
He noted that the Ministry is currently tasked with satisfying an estimated 30,000-house lot.
President Bharrat Jagdeo has announced publicly that a further 17,000 house lots will be developed in the next two and a half years and according to Ali “we are ready for this challenge.”
He divulged that already his Ministry is in the process of identifying various areas where development will be introduced.
According to Ali, by the end of the stipulated period, he is confident that the Ministry will be able to satisfy the demand on most of the administrative regions with the exception of Region Four where the demand is expected to remain very high.
And in order to aid this process and resolve issues in the housing sector, the Minister revealed that a three-angle approach is being utilised.
This approach he disclosed, comes as part of a programme, which encourages professional partnerships that include nurses, police, engineers, doctors; a private partner and a developers’ partnership.
“In time we will certainly be able to see the demand for house lots being on par with the demand,” the Minister added.
