With the favourable weather currently being experienced, the long-awaited commencement of the Guyana Hockey Board outdoor season will finally get started today, at the GCC ground.
It will mark the beginning of the Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Hockey League, which is the most prestigious tournament on the local calendar.
Today’s game will feature perennial powerhouse GCC against archrivals Old Fort, two teams that are among the oldest existing clubs in the country and who’ve faced off many times in the past in some memorable battles.
Old Fort will be led by the evergreen Wayne St. Jules in defence and he will be supported by the crafty Dexter Wyles in midfield, combined with the speed and skill of the Simon brothers (Aderemi & Askofu), Jason DeSantos and John Abrahams.
The GCC line-up features the experience Damon Woodroffe in defence along with the speed and power of Dwayne Scott, while Orland Semple and Kevin Spencer will once again look to dazzle the crowd with their exciting stick work in attack.
The League is the longest running competition in Guyana, dating back over 30 years with its winner usually being considered the national outdoor men’s champion and eligible to represent Guyana at the annual Pan American Hockey Club Championships.
GCC has had a strong spell in recent times, winning the competition eight of the last 10 years, while the defending champions, Hikers have won it outright on one occasion and were joint winners with Old Fort on another.
Match time is 16:45 hrs.
