Commander 2nd Infantry Battalion (Res), Guyana Defence Force, Lieutenant Colonel Alonzo Hartley, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation yesterday afternoon.
Lt Col Hartley, 45, had earlier completed a game of squash at Base Camp Ayanganna and was on his way home when he complained of feeling unwell.
He was assisted by ranks and later transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead before receiving medical attention.
There are reports that Hartley had complained of feeling unwell a few weeks ago. Hartley, who resided at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, is survived by his wife Delicia, two children, Zonel and Dexter; his mother, Yvonne, brother Aubrey, and several other siblings.
A press release from the GDF described Hartley as a kind, loving and adorable husband and father who will be greatly missed by his wife and family.
Lt Colonel Hartley enlisted as an Officer Cadet in the GDF and completed the Standard Officers Course # 12 in 1982.
He was promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel on January 2005.
He completed several military courses locally and abroad, earning a Master’s Degree in Military Operations in Brazil in 2004.
The Chief-of-Staff, Officers and Other Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force have since extended their sincere condolences to the wife, children and relatives and friends of the late Lt. Colonel Alonzo Hartley.
