Government’s effort to equip all secondary schools and at least fifty percent of the nation’s primary schools with computer laboratories by 2013, received a shot in the arm from Food for the Poor Guyana Inc, yesterday.
Education Minister Shaik Baksh yesterday received 21 sets of training computer systems valued at $1.6m from Food for the Poor Chairman, Paul Chan-A-sue, in the organizations boardroom.
Depending on the feedback, Food for the Poor, Leon Davis, the Executive Director FFTP said that within a month’s time fifty more sets might become available to the Ministry through sourcing out of Miami.
Each set comprises one Central processing unit, seven monitors, seven keyboards, seven mouses and six expansion kits.
Those targeted to benefit from the use of the systems are students drawn from Regions Three, Four, Five and Six.
Minister Baksh said that the computers would assist in improving the learning capabilities of the students with emphasis to improve the literacy and numeracy for the beneficiaries.
His ministry is already equipped with the skills to provide support services to the schools.
“We are working to ensure that the area is prepared for the computers to be installed and we will be giving technical assistance and follow up teacher training to use the computers and facilitate IT training in our school system,” Minister Baksh said.
Minister Baksh said that the computers would be distributed to schools in some of the nation’s depressed communities for teaching and learning. He added that his government feels the need to target the communities for Information Technology development.
The ministry, through an on going ‘Success Maker programme, initially installed computer laboratories in 14 schools. These have enhanced the students learning capabilities.
Through additional funding the ministry has extended the programme to 40 more schools and is procuring systems to launch “Success Makers” programmes.
Last year, the ministry collected about 500 systems from the Diaspora in the USA and Canada and Minister Baksh expressed the belief that donations this year may surpass the previous lot with Food for the Poor being added to the donor group.
Over the years the Education Ministry has benefited from FFTP donations of furniture, books and other school supplies as well as from assistance for the school feeding programmes.
And yesterday, Food for the Poor donated combination chairs and tables and cupboards valued at $800,000 to various schools nationwide.
Cognisant of the fact that sport, play a positive and meaningful role in the lives of children, $80,000 worth of footballs were also distributed to schools, youth groups and various communities.
