Residents of Buckhall, a community situated on the Essequibo mainland, are making an urgent plea for Government officials to establish a school in the area.
This call comes after these residents noted that such an institution is extremely important to their children’s development.
There are about 25 families living in the Buckhall – Barama area in addition to those who live along the Barama Trail. One of these residents, Mr. Yano Persaud, lives with his family and works in the area.
He told Kaieteur News that scores of children in the area are unable to attend school.
Their parents are farmers and miners while a few are employed at Barama. Persaud said that when Barama started its operation officials at that company had promised to establish a school in the area.
They had also promised to supply electricity to residents in the area. “These promises are still to materialize,” Persaud said. At present, the Company employs about 500 workers, most of them living in Buckhall.
Another resident, Thakur Persaud, has pledged a few acres of land to facilitate the construction of a school.
However, he said that he is unable to construct the school and is calling on the government to assist in the construction phase. Students residing at Buckhall are forced to travel about three miles as the nearest school to their homes is situated on the opposite side of Barama, on Troolie Island.
Residents also complain that the teaching staff is inadequate. They said that currently, there is only one teacher at that school which has seven pupils.
That school was established by the Scots Presbyterian Church years ago when farming was the main means of livelihood on that island. Over the years, migration has caused the decline in the school’s population. This newspaper was told that whenever the headmaster leaves the school to attend to other business, the school is closed.
They feel that the school could be moved from its present location to the other side of the island.
