Defending champions New Amsterdam United (NAU) and Rosignol United collide in the final of the 2009 Cheddi Jagan Memorial Football Tournament on Saturday night, following semi-final wins on Saturday last at the Rosignol Community Centre ground.
NAU trounced Monedderlust 4-2, while Rosignol got past Corriverton Links 2-0. New Amsterdam opened the scoring, when former junior national Shurlone Edwards beat an advancing keeper, Alwin McDonald with a well timed shot 18 minutes into the game. Monedderlust were able to equalise the score with a Kevin Layne goal 10 minutes later.
But a Colin Bowry 34th minute effort restored the advantage for New Amsterdam at lemon time.
Three minutes into the 2nd half, Monedderlust again drew level compliments of a Gladwin Johnson strike, but the young New Amsterdam side thereafter resolved to put the game beyond the reach of Monedderlust.
Bowry recorded his second goal of the match in the 72nd minute, and Adrian Adams sealed the deal five minutes later.
Rosignol United wore down a game Corriverton Links team to triumph 2-0. Captain Clifford Campbell from the penalty spot in the 26th minute and Keyron Boston in the 71st to guide their side into the championship match against NAU, scheduled for Saturday at the Skeldon Community Centre ground.
Kick-off at 18:30hrs will be the third place match-up between Corriverton Links and Monedderlust.
Lights for Saturday’s games have been provided compliments of BK International and Region Six Administration. This will be the first time that a football final will be played in the Corentyne area.
