NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Though Government is striving to diverse the economy there are those who are attracted to, “illusions of grandeur in other countries…This is the country we must build.”
These were the words of Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, when he addressed the flag raising ceremony on the lawns of State House in New Amsterdam yesterday.
The occasion was Guyana’s 43rd anniversary as an independent nation.
He emphasised that Guyanese must join in the process of developing their country to ensure a prosperous future.
He spoke of Palestine where they are still struggling to attain independence. “We have to give our solidarity…We have to give our support…Because we know what it is to be independent. We in Guyana define our own destiny…We in Guyana make our own mistakes and we correct our mistakes.”
Touching on economic and social development, the Minister said that the proof is evident in all sectors but there are those who prefer not to notice.
New Amsterdam Mayor, Claude Henry, spoke about the visions of two fallen heroes – President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham and President Cheddi Jagan, who achieve independence. All past leaders have left legacies that present day citizens should emulate and continue that selfless struggle they started, he said.
Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, called on the nation to build unity and recommit itself to the task of nation-building.
He added that the selfless struggles of the ancestors who arrived on these shores as slaves and as indentured immigrants should always be remembered.
Among those also addressing the ceremony was Minister within the Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.
The nation’s 43rd anniversary observance saw representatives from the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Service and other Government agencies along with the Constabulary Department of the New Amsterdam Town Council, students from the New Amsterdam Nursing School, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Berbice High School, Tutorial Academy and All Saints Primary School participating.
Just moments after the Golden Arrow Head was hoisted, the students of the All Saints Primary rendered the National Anthem.
Prior to the ceremony, there was a parade through the streets of New Amsterdam.
