Edinburgh make auspicious debut
The Tenelec Inc First Division Berbice 50-Over Cricket Competition continued on Saturday with second round matches.
Test players Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon spearheaded Albion to an easy 9-wicket win over Scotsburg United (SU).
Chattergoon took 4-10 with his leg-spin as SU fell for 108 in 39 overs before he and Deonarine added 105 for the first wicket in 17 overs to guide Albion to 110-1 from 17.4 overs. Sewnarine fell for 43 (4 fours) while Deonarine an unbeaten 52 with 6 fours.
Watched by a large and noisy crowd, East Bank Berbice side Edinburgh made an auspicious First Division debut by beating Blairmont and Bermine over the weekend on the lightening fast and well maintained Edinburgh ground.
On Saturday, the off- spin pair of Raid Ali and Ralph Chakalall and pacer Trevon Peters took three wickets each as Blairmont were dismissed for 214 in 47 overs.
Nedesh Basdeo led the way for the Region Five side with six fours in 71 before Ali, a former Berbice youth player, returned to hit 7 fours in 55. Yudranauth Seepersaud (48) supported as saw Edinburgh won by four wickets.
Sherwin Murray’s 61 spurred Skeldon to 173 in 37 overs against Upper Corentyne whose off-spinner Bheem Singh took 5-23 as Upper Corentyne fell 9 runs short of their victory target.
On Sunday, Edinburgh continued their winning ways by beating Bermine by three wickets after reaching 243-7 in 47.2 overs replying to Bermine’s 239-9.
Under-19 player Keion DeJesus struck 5 fours and 2 sixes in 95, while Essequibo off-spinner Andrew Williams made 33 with 1 four and a six and former Berbice off-spinner Sean Devers 25 with 4 fours.
National Female Cricketer Tremayne Smartt, the only female playing at the first division level in Guyana, made 15. Zaheer Hussain took 3 wickets and Ravi Bridgelall 2.
Shafiq Khan smashed 10 fours in 73 and got support from Bridgelall (47) and Denny David (19).
Berbice Under-19 off-spinner Joemal La Fleur (2-49) opened the bowling while Devers (2-26) and Williams (1-24) bowled in tandem for 20 overs which produced just 51 runs.
But once they completed their spells with 83 required from the last 10 overs, Edinburgh helped by sloppy fielding and aggressive batting, won in entertaining fashion with 2.4 overs to spare.

Skeldon beat Upper Corentyne by 9 runs. In a match reduced to 46 overs, Skeldon made 173 in 37 overs (Murray 61, Jermain Reid 39. Bheem Singh 5-23. Edinburgh beat Blairmont by 4 wickets. Blairmont- 214 in 47 overs (Basdeo 71, Bissoondial 48, Naresh Boodram 23, Chakalall 3-23, Peters 3-53, Ali 3-44). Edinburgh 215-6 in 41.1 overs (Ali 55, Seepersaud 48, Robin Seebarran 31, Brendon Bess 3-54 from 7 overs). Albion beat SU by 9 wickets. SU-108 in 39 overs (Mark Lionel 38, Chattergoon 4-10, Doodnauth Lallbeharry 2-17, Hemant Rabindradat 2-10). Albion- 110 in 17.4 overs (Deonarine 52*, Chattergoon 43)
