Campbelltown claimed the first ever Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Mahdia Independence Under-15 Inter-block football title yesterday at the Mahdia playfield. The winners edged Central Mahdia 7-6 on sudden death penalty kicks. The competition was organised by Errol ‘Beeks’ Mootoo.
Goalkeeper Romel Hendricks (Campbelltown) was voted the MVP.
Meanwhile, play in the senior Inter-block tournament was due to be concluded between Roger Hinds Lions and defending champs Air Strip.
The pair had booked their spots in the final following Monday’s opening night contests in the four-team competition.
In a rematch of last year’s final, Air Strip had to tread through penalty kicks to defeat Central Mahdia 4-2 after the scores were locked at 1-1 at regulation time. Clive Chester opened the scoring for Central in the 47th minute, while Johnson Joseph (57) brought Air Strip level, forcing spot kicks.
RH Lions also had to endure spot kicks to run out eventual winners 4-3 over Campbelltown. Cordell Wharton (15) struck early for Campbelltown. However, Phiago McDonald (46) netted the equaliser only to be red carded four minutes later after receiving his second yellow card.
His team held on to force penalties, which they won to claim a place in the final.
The winner collect $100,000, compliments of businessman Roger Hinds, while the runners-up get $30,000 donated by Amanda Soloman of Mandy’s One Stop Shop at Mahdia.
