– escapes with $200,000
A manager’s assistant at an online shopping centre handed over $200,000 to a knife-wielding bandit who threatened to rape her during a well planned robbery.
Ashley Williams, an employee at Guy Express, located on the ground floor of the King’s Plaza Hotel, on Main Street was alone in the office when the attack occurred around 12:15 hours yesterday.
Speaking with this newspaper an hour after the traumatising ordeal, proprietress of the business, Sabrina Savory, said that she was attending classes at the University of Guyana when she received a call on her cellular phone.
The caller was Williams, her assistant who, in tears, requested that she come to the office urgently.
Savory said that she subsequently learnt that the bandit, who gave his name as Sheldon Ishwar, had visited the office earlier yesterday morning and had requested a quotation for an item he wished to purchase using the online services that the business provides.
He deposited $17,000 and promised to return later to complete the transaction.
“When she asked him for his telephone number, he said that that was not a problem and he would come back later,” Savory related.
In his absence, several customers visited the establishment and from all appearances the bandit was awaiting the perfect opportunity to strike.
He must have been waiting nearby, for as soon as the last customer left, he walked in and locked the only door at the entrance of the office. With a knife in his hand he approached Williams and ordered her to hand over all the cash in her possession, and threatening to rape her if she did not.
The terrified staffer did as she was told and the bandit calmly walked away.
Williams waited for several minutes before raising an alarm but by then the bandit had disappeared.
The police were summoned and they have launched an investigation.
