A mysterious fire last night flattened a two-bedroom wooden house in Meadow Brook, leaving three brothers homeless.
The fire, which started around 19:00 hours, quickly destroyed the building before anyone could salvage anything.
The house was owned by Linda McKenzie, who has been residing in Barbados, and who left her three sons in the property.
At the time of the blaze none of the occupants was at home.
Abiola Alleyne, a niece of the owner, who lives nearby, recalled that she saw the fire at the back of the property.
She said that she left her home and began calling for one of the occupants of the house, not realising that no one was at home.
“By the time he could come, we couldn’t do nothing because the fire was already to the front.
And we call the fire service,” Alleyne said.
She told this newspaper that one of the occupants of the house became so frustrated after seeing all his belongings going up in flames that he disappeared soon after the flames were doused by the Guyana Fire Service.
A neighbour, who lives on the northern side of the burnt out house, told this newspaper that he was watching television when he heard shouts of ‘Fire! Fire!’
He said that by the time he checked the fire was already raging and flames were coming through the windows.
“I just get busy soaking the side of me house. Nobody was inside. Only God knows what start de fire.
We didn’t see nobody going or coming from in deh,” the neighbour said.
