There is a conventional view that people born with physical impediments are less likely to be of use to society. This view was rubbished when the National Sports Commission staged its independence aquatic meet for persons with varying physical and mental impediments, at the Colgrain Pool, Camp Street.
Indeed, several contestants from seven organisations, that specifically renders care for members of the differently abled clan were engaged in fierce rivalry in several aquatic events.
The East Bank Special Needs School sent 11 representatives while the St Barnabas Special Needs School fielded 10. Five persons represented the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, while Kuru Kururu and the Linden Centre for the disabled each had two representatives. One person from the Diamond Special Needs School also competed in the aquatic meet.
The contestants that were categorized in the physically challenged department participated in activities such as tube race, male and female dog paddle race, kickboard race for the visually impaired and breaststroke for the visually impaired, among others. At the end of the meet, everyone present admitted that indeed the participants had earned the right to viewed not as disabled, but as differently abled.
The results of the meet are: Girls 25yds freestyle 15 years and under for Intellectually Disabled (ID): Felicia James of St Barnabas Special School finished first while her teammate, Sharmaine James came in second. Boy’s 25yds freestyle 15 years and under for ID: Randolf Chan of the Ptolemy Reid Rehab Centre (PRRC) was the first to brace the tape while Alan Shaw of the PRRC finished in the second place.
Female open 10yrds tube race for the physically challenged (PC): 1st Punwattie (PRRC), 2nd Sophia Tinnie of the East Bank Special Needs School (EBSNS) and 3rd, Timeka Octave (PRRC).
Male Open 10yds Tube Race for the PC: 1st Peter Charles (PRRC), 2nd Ronald Sugrim Community Based Rehabilitation, Essequibo (CBR). 3rd Roderick Griffith (Diamond Special Needs School)
Female Dog Paddle Race for novices: 1st place, Kelly Ann Persaud (EBSNS) while Amanda Rogers of CBR Kuru Kururu , came in second. Melissa Elsopp (EBSNS) was third.
Male dog paddle races for novices: 1st Dellon McClean (CBR Kuru Kururu), 2nd, Randolf Chan (PRRC), 3rd, Mukesh Persaud (EBSNS).
Male open 50yds for the hearing impaired: 1st Paulo Van Doiman-Linden Care for the Disabled (LCD), 2nd Colin Sertima (EBSNS), Timothy Richards- St Barnabas Special Needs School (SBSNS).
Male open 25yds kickboard race for the visually impaired and blind: 1st James Ogle (EBSNS), 2nd Andre Reid (SBSNS), 3rd Leon Williams (EBSNS).
Female 50yds backstroke for the hearing impaired: 1st Colleen Roberts (EBSNS), Kendra Jobe (SBSNS), 3rd Sherika Ramlachan (EBSNS).
Male 50yds backstroke for the hearing impaired: 1st Paulo Van Doiman – Linden Care for the Disabled (LCD), 2nd Colin Sertima (EBSNS), and 3rd Andrew Smart (SBSNS).
Male open 25yds backstroke for the visually impaired: 1st Seedat Ketwaroo (CBR Essequibo)
Female open 25yds breaststroke for the intellectually disabled: 1st Felicia James (SBSNS), 2nd Sharmaine James (SBSNS) and 3rd Colleen Roberts (EBSNS)
Male open 25yds breaststroke for the intellectually impaired: 1st Andrew Smartt (SBSNS) and 2nd Mitch Thomas (SBSNS).
