Two bandits escaped with almost $5M after terrorizing a Parika Outfalls, East Bank Essequibo poultry farmer and his family during a Sunday afternoon robbery.
They however dropped a firearm as they were fleeing the scene.
Police said that around 16:45 hours two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered the business place of Cyril Brenira on the pretext of purchasing chicken. They proceeded to hold up the businessman, his wife and 12-year-old stepson.
The men then ransacked the victims’ home and took away a canister reportedly containing $1.7 million, US$600 and jewellery valued at $2.5 million along with two cell phones and escaped in a waiting motor vehicle.
During the robbery, Brenira’s wife raised an alarm, and as the perpetrators were running to their getaway vehicle, the firearm, a .38 revolver and one matching round, fell to the ground and was subsequently recovered by the police.
During the incident, the businessman was chopped on his hand by one of his attackers.
Yesterday, police in their investigations detained several persons from the Parika area.
