– hopes to break into APL
The second round of the Nassau Cricket League was played last weekend at Beach 32 Rockaway and former Guyana and West Indies youth team wicketkeeper Vishal Nagamootoo, spearheaded United Sports to another victory.
Larry Logan top scored with 37 as Rising Star could only reach 176-6 when their 40 overs expired. The 32-year-old Nagamootoo followed up his first round century with a brilliant unbeaten 103 as United Sports galloped to 177-1 in 26 overs.
In chilly conditions, Rising Star won the toss and were off to a flying start as opener Ram Bisram (35) and Roger Williams (28) put on 62 before Williams departed.
But the middle order failed to fire, as Trinidadian Dave Mohamed took 3-20 for United Sports.
Nagamootoo, the nephew of former West Indies Captains Rohan Kanhai and Alvin Kallicharran and brother of ex-Test leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo, featured in two outstanding partnerships.
The right-hander, who scored a century and two 50s for Guyana in 61 First-Class matches between 1995 and 2005, dominated a 109-run opening stand with Hemchand Hardeo (22) before adding 68 in an unfinished second wicket partnership with USA captain and fellow Guyanese Steve Massiah, who hit an entertaining 41.
The competition has been put on hold this weekend due to the Memorial Day observances in the USA and United Sports next game is against Alliance CC at Rockaway the following.
The Berbician Nagamootoo, who now bowls off-spin after doing wicketkeeping duties, told Kaieteur Sport that his batting has improved tremendously since migrating to the USA four years ago
after his last First-Class game against the Leeward Islands.
“I am not yet qualified to represent the USA at the International level but I am enjoying my cricket here and the competition is fairly high since several former first-class players, including many from the West Indies, play in the league here,” Nagamootoo said.
The interest level among cricket fans and players in the USA has increased with the introduction of the American Premier League (APL) and Vishal says he is hoping to break into this league.
“This could be a very big thing for cricket over here and not only because of the money involved and my brother (Mahendra) is trying to link me up with one of the teams. If the USA qualifies for next year’s 20/20 World Cup in the West Indies cricket could really take off over here in a big way,” Nagamootoo added.
