NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – By mid-June the New Amsterdam Town Council would once again offer services for clearing sewerage systems in New Amsterdam and outlying areas.
According to Health Inspector for New Amsterdam, Ackloo Ramsudh, the Council’s excavator was non-operational since 2004. There were some problems with the suction which was subsequently damaged and the parts could not be acquired.
As a result a decision was finally made to contract a private mechanic in New Amsterdam to repair the affected part and this took some time.
Last week, the rehabilitation of the excavator was completed and a test run was carried out, signaling the equipment was ready for use.
The New Amsterdam Town Council would now charge residential customers a $10,000 fee and $15,000 for commercial.
Next month, interested persons can visit the New Amsterdam Town Hall, pay the stipulated amount and within 24 hours, the Council would render the service.
In the absence of the excavator, private entities offered the service.
Mr. Ramsudh indicated that over the years many residents emptied their septic tanks and dumped the faeces in drains while some buried the contents.
He noted that by so doing, these persons were putting the health of others at risk. According to him, faeces coming from both human and animal contain many harmful bacteria and so far there has been no report of outbreak of any major communicable disease.
He further stated that by dumping such contents into the drainage system, the same water from the waterway flows back into residential areas, especially during floods, and this poses a serious threat.
Water at surface level when contaminated flows freely taking the contaminants with it. On the other hand when something is buried or contained in soil, the stuff must pass through the soil and this process acts as a form of filtration.
According to him, while burying of faeces is not totally safe, it was the only appropriate alternative for residents. The Council has a designated place, which is called a ‘soak away pit’ for getting rid of the faeces. This is located at the dumpsite at Esplanade in a secluded section.
The area is treated with a chemical as the need arises to prevent nuisances that might arise.
