Jason Ray Khalil as expected was voted the Most Outstanding Player when the curtains came down on this year’s Woodpecker Products National Junior Squash Championships which ended yesterday, at the Georgetown Club Courts.
Champions were crowned in ten different categories, on a day that saw several new faces emerge to take their places among the country’s elite squash players.
Khalil was awarded for his outstanding achievements during the competition after he won the boys Under-15 and 17 categories and narrowly placed second in the Under-19 category.
He was joined by Alexander Cheeks and Taylor Fernandes, two emerging stars who have shown remarkable improvement over the past few months.
Nicholas Peters also received the sportsmanship award.
Trophies were presented by Woodpecker Products representative Nicolette Fernandes, who returned home to continue training after a successful return to the international arena.
In brief comments, Tournament Director Robert Fernandes thanked the Georgetown Club and its staff, sponsors and respective coaches of the junior programme for their input in making the tournament a success.
He also made special mention of Dennis Dias and Connections Travel Agency for their generosity in donating a public address system to the Guyana Squash Association which will greatly improve the quality of the GSA’s tournament announcements.
Attention now turns to the national selectors as they attempt the tough task of selecting the national team to defend Guyana’s Boys, Girls and Overall team titles it claimed last year in Bermuda.
This year’s tournament will take place in Barbados from July 10-19.
