A two-member high level team from the Cuban Medical Services arrived in Guyana last week with the aim of inspecting the National Ophthalmology Hospital, Port Mourant, to determine its technical preparedness in anticipation of the commencement of surgical activities at the beginning of next month.
This was confirmed by Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, who said that he hopes that at the end of the two-week stay the facility will be given the go ahead to commence surgeries.
This newspaper understands that Ramsaran held discussions with the team on its arrival.
Meanwhile, the Cuban technicians continue to install equipment, including laser equipment.
The Ophthalmology Hospital, which started screening on February 9, has already screened some 5,000 patients of whom 700 have been identified for surgery.
These will be among the first to benefit from the surgical facilities at the hospital in June.
Minister Ramsaran indicated that the Ministry of Health introduced the low cost spectacle under which needy patients who requires spectacles pay a nominal fee of $10,000 for any type of spectacle prescribed by the specialists.
He added since the programme began in March at the hospital, some 200 Guyanese have benefited.
Dr. Ramsaran added that government is looking forward to the commencement of surgeries at the Hospital.
Mission Miracle came to an end last month with the return of its 80th flight. The dispatch of patients for Havana will now be fully replaced with the facilities in place at the Port Mourant Hospital.
There are currently 28 Cubans manning the hospital. The full complement is expected to be about 40 with a small Guyanese staffing.
Ramsaran said that the transition from Cuban to Guyanese doctors will be gradual and they are hoping it will be done within the next five to ten years.
