– face elimination
South Ruimveldt must be thinking of two things today – resurrection and the indispensable message of lessons learnt. The half-million-dollar question tonight is what they must do right, after losing first in a perfectly scripted situation.
Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust played from behind to stun South in the final two minutes of game one in their best-of-three semi-final of the HJTV and Lens Craft Inter-Ward Championships at the Sports Hall Tuesday night.
Overconfidence and underestimation were the clear characteristics of their 79-75 lost, but an analysis of the game should propel tonight’s encounter into the category of one of the best in the tournament.
South certainly proved that they can match Wortmanville offensively but has major work to do on its defensive endurance. Wortmanville had the offence to keep them in game one, but they also had that extra special energy to finish.
While inexperience can be blamed for South’s oversight in the initial game, some of their top players on the roster are expected to lead the team tonight. Sherwin Roberts and Steve Neils Jr. are crucial factors in that regard.
Roberts shoots the ball at a very high three-point percentage and is usually very accurate while Neils creates the plays for Roberts, forwards Gavin Beeram and Dane Kendall at the bottom. It must be a collective effort.
Wortmanville will enter the clash with a lot of enthusiasm, which is usually attributed to come-from-behind wins since, in a strange way it sort of proved that South can play their best game and still end up on the losing end.
The former champions fought their way to victory with consistent defensive pressure that helped them surpass South’s offence. Experience and reliability were their theme as they pried away at a daunting fourth quarter lead in game one.
The implications will be psychological for South. Naylon Loncke will continue to incite a mental advantage on the court and is likely to get support from Royston Siland, Mark Trotz and the fatiguing presence of Clement Brusche.
South faces a sweep tonight, but they have proven that they have the ingredients to defeat Wortmanville. The adjustments must be made to force game three or South will join the other unfortunates that have exited the competition.
