– seven batsmen score 50s
By Sean Devers
Former Guyana Under-19 leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves captured 6-55 while left-arm spinner Clinton Collins grabbed 5-59 yesterday on the opening day of the latest round of matches in the Cellink Plus two-day first-division cricket competition in Georgetown.
The 20-year-old Gonsalves took his wicket tally to 26 from five matches with his third five-wicket haul of the season, as Everest took first innings points from Transport Sports Club (TSC) at Everest, while Collins’ good work for GDF helped to dismiss the hosts DCC for 196.
Waslim Haslim (76), Yannick Grimes (69), Leon Johnson (51), Steven Jacobs (67*), Rawle Browne (53), Rayon Griffith (51*), and Chris Patandin (55) all registered fifties with Jacobs and Griffith hoping to convert their scores into centuries today.
At Everest, TSC fell for 144 with Chandra Persaud (30), Shane Cummings (24) and Anthony Shew (24) getting starts. Gonsalves got support from fellow left-arm spinner Sauid Drepaul (3-34).
Patandin (55), Surendra Herilall (38), Gonsalves (38), Chanderpaul Hemraj (29*) and Drepaul (25*) then helped Everest to 187-4 by the close, as the Camp Road team enjoy a lead of 43 runs.
At Police, the in-form Browne (53), Regionald Rodrigues (48*), Troy Benn (30) and Ricardo Devers (30) rallied the Cops to 200 as Collis Butts (4-38), his father Clyde Butts (4-43) and Ken Alphonso (2-18) did the damage with the ball for GINC, who reached 135-4 by the close.
Griffith, who was dropped off Devers on 15, is unbeaten on 51 after Jermaine Moe (27) and Delroy Charles (24) failed to build on good starts. Clyde Butts (0*) is the other not out batsman.
Off-spinner Devers has so far taken 2-40 as GNIC finished the day 66 runs away from first innings points.
At Malteenoes, GCC amassed 321 as Haslim, Grimes and Johnson led the way. Orin Forde finished with 4-74 and left-arm spinner Damion Vantull 3-51 for MSC, who reached 108-2 by the close, still needing 214 for first innings points.
Jacobs and Forde (6*) are the unbeaten batsmen after Imran Hassan (25) added 101 for the second wicket with Jacobs.
At DCC, GDF were 9-1 after dismissing DCC for 196. Play began after lunch due to a wet pitch caused by overnight rain.
Chris Barnwell (42), Derwin Christian (23), Cohen Ismonds (23) and Kester Harcourt (22) offered some resistance as Travis Gilbert supported Collins with 2-42 for the Soldiers.
Today is the final day and play is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs in all four games.
