The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) sounded an ominous warning to all opposition when they came from behind to capture the Trophy Stall-sponsored 10-a-side Rugby Tournament after beating Pepsi Hornets 27-12 to end with an unassailable 16 points.
GDF enjoyed a 15-12 lead at the break. With one more game to play in the competition on Wednesday between Hornets and Caribs, the Army after their win yesterday placed themselves in an unbeatable position since neither Hornets (6 points) or Caribs on 2 could overtake them.
On target for the winners were Joseph Rahaman and Avery Corbin, who each scored 2 tries, while Algernon Felix added the other and Cordell Carrington made 1 conversion.
For Hornets, Jason Tyrell and Jamal Yarde each went over the try-line once and Ryan George made a single conversion.
Meanwhile, Rahaman sits in pole position to claim the Most Valuable Player award, having scored 30 points in the competition.
Speaking after the game, Coach of the Army Clinton Clarke told Kaieteur Sport that they intend to shut a lot of people’s mouths this year. “I’m really proud of the guys; the standard of rugby has lifted and this is because we are training two times per day.
Clarke said that they’ve been looking forward to winning this tournament and they did it.
He added that his advice to the team was that nobody looks at second place, but rather, when you win you are in demand.
Asked whether he thought that the team could win a Sevens tournament, Clarke mentioned that the team is very confident right now and eager to win every single tournament so the format of the competition should not make a difference.
He extended thanks to the support staff of the GDF, especially Sgt. Major Jermaine Craig, who he disclosed gives them all the support they need during training.
