Defending champions Alpha United and the Guyana Defence Force continued their neck and neck showing in the first round of the Cellink Premier League, following victories on Friday evening at the Tucville ground.
Alpha ensured that the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) remained pointless with a 3-0 win over the Bourda Blues, while the Soldiers showed that they were more familiar with the terrain as they tamed Western Tigers 2-0.
The defending champs aka ‘The Hammer’ proved that they are eager to make it four titles in a row as they dominated the GFC boys, who have fallen away somewhat from their performance in the 2008 league.
Philbert Moffatt placed Alpha into the lead 23 minutes into the game and GFC were able to hold off the champs for quite sometime. Quincy Madramootoo nailed the second goal in the 73rd minute with Dwight Peters sealing the deal 10 minutes to full time. Alpha now move to 13 points while improving their goal average.
The ever improving GDF side with a point to prove, continue to remain in striking distance of the champions and are behind on goal difference only, but with similar points, 13.
Western Tigers, back in the mix after winning the division-one league are still finding it tough to regain their once dominant reputation in the bigger group.
And the Army ensured that they were not going to be the team for the Tigers to regain such confidence with a comfortable 2-0 win, which they secured in the first 45 minutes.
Star forward Stellon David in the 19th and Devon Harris on the stroke of half time were the players on target for the GDF. Western remain on 3 points.
Competition continues this evening at the same venue with another double-header. Home team Fruta Conquerors match skills with Flamingo from 18:00hrs with the main game brining together Sunburst Camptown and Pele.
