Seon Persaud, a 20-year-old, was remanded to prison by magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday, on a charge of robbery under arms.
It was alleged that the accused on May 16, last, at North Road, Bourda, he robbed Vickraj Singh of items valuing $11,400 while armed with an ice-pick.
He was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
Police Prosecutor Robert Clement asked that the accused be remanded to prison. Persaud also appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, to answer another charge of robbery using personal violence.
This time, on May 15, at North Road, Bourda, he allegedly robbed Clive Layne of items valuing $28,000. It was also alleged that during or soon after robbing Clive Layne he used personal violence against the Layne.
He pleaded not guilty to that charge and was represented by attorney at law Geon Persaud.
According to the lawyer his client resides at Lot 66 Leopold and Cross Streets, Werk-en-Rust.
The lawyer explained that Persaud was arrested since Sunday evening and was kept at the Brickdam Police Station lock-ups and only brought to court yesterday.
He said that Persaud was not given the opportunity to contact relatives or solicit the services of an attorney.
He also asked that the matter be dismissed because the virtual complainants were not present and also because of the defendant’s age. The lawyer said that Persaud is only 15 years old.
However at this point Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith interjected and stated that the defendant had given his age as 20, earlier in another court.
“Your worship he just told the magistrate in Court Five (Octive-Hamilton) that he is 20, and he is telling you that he is 15. He needs to be certain of his age.”
The prosecutor also added that when Persaud was charged recently and had given his age as 20.
Attorney at law Geon Persaud then told the court that his client was assaulted and is being targeted because of his sexual orientation.
The prosecution further stated that bail should be refused because of the seriousness of the offence, adding that if Persaud is granted his pretrial liberty the likelihood exists that he may commit similar offences.
The accused was remanded to prison and is expected to make another court appearance on June 2.
And Andre Allicock, 25, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison by Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton.
It was alleged that the accused, on May 20, at Stabroek Market, had in his possession 40 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty and was unrepresented in court.
Police Prosecutor Robert Clement asked that the accused be remanded.
The prosecutor was granted his application and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on August 7.
Police on Wednesday shot Allicock after he allegedly attempted to escape from custody.
According to a police press release, Allicock was sitting in a chair at the market, with a plastic bag which allegedly contained 40 grams of marijuana.
A scuffle ensued between Allicock and one of the ranks as he made efforts to free himself. During the fracas the rank fired a shot and Allicock was hit.
