Former Berbice division-one champs Monedderlust FC of West Coast Berbice upstaged 2009 Mackeson/Digicel Sweet 16 champions Cougars 5-4 on penalty kicks, to book their place in the semi-finals of the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Football Tournament at the Rosignol Community Centre ground.
The semis are set for this evening at the Scotts School ground.
Cougars went ahead in the match-up but could not hold unto their slim lead as the game ended 1-1, before Monedderlust went on to win from spot kicks.
Rosignol United wore down a game Mahaicony United to triumph 3-1; Corriverton Links continued their winning ways, brushing aside Barzilla 3-0, with Adrian Adams celebrating his call up to national duties, by unleashing a hat-trick for New Amsterdam United who banged Real Union 4-0 as the winners moved into the final four stage.
Cougars took the lead in their game against Monedderlust when Ryan Stewart squeezed one past goalkeeper Alwin McDonald in the 21st minute. A fierce contest ensued with both goalkeepers Ryan Kellowan and McDonald brining off brilliant saves.
McDonald was well supported by his defence, marshaled by Trevis Henry, one of four national selectees from Berbice.
The second half saw both teams fighting fiercely to provide opportunities, but it was former (2006, 2007) back to back League Champions, Monedderlust, who got the better of the exchanges, with Marlon Jordon netting in similar manner, beating the advancing Kellowan in the 63rd minute.
The score remained unchanged when regulation time expired, extra time failed to separate the teams as did regulation penalty kicks. It was during sudden death penalty kicks that Monedderlust were able to clinch victory.
Rosignol United also found themselves trailing Mahaicony, who drew first blood 11 minutes into the game, compliments of a Keion Sobers strike.
Rosignol’s national selectee Tyson Carmichael, well known for his all round ability equalised in the 53rd minute with a well placed shot from outside of the 18-yard box to beat the keeper.
A well directed penalty by Captain Clifford Campbell in the 64th and a Norbert Paul sealer one minute to full time wrapped up proceedings for Rosignol.
Corriverton Links continued their rich vein of form with a commanding 3-0 win over Brazilla.
Oliver Jaundoo (17), Tyrone Peneux (60) and Bradford Moore in the 67th minute were the players hitting the network for the winners.
Cornel Taylor of Barzilla was given marching orders by Referee Ingram Johnson in the 67th minute for serious foul play.
Adrian Adams netted a hat-trick (10th, 19th & 33rd) to guide New Amsterdam United to a comfortable 4-0 win over Real Union. Kelvin Joseph tucked in the other for New Amsterdam in the 21st.
The battle for a place in the final is set for this evening at the Scotts School ground. Corriverton Links will battle Rosignol United with New Amsterdam facing Monedderlust in the feature match up. Kick off time is 18:30hrs.
Meanwhile the grand finale and 3rd place matches will be contested at the Skeldon Community Centre ground under lights, compliments of BK International in collaboration with the Region Six Administration.
