After a lengthy lay off from international competition, Guyana’s footballers will be back in contention when they compete in the Parbo Beer Football Tournament scheduled for neighbouring Suriname, June 1-8.
In an effort to put together the strongest possible team, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has shortlisted a 26-man squad that will be encamped for 10 days, which started yesterday at the Palace De Leon Hotel, Kitty.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, GFF General Secretary Noel Adonis disclosed that the Federation will not be calling on any of its overseas-based players to be a part of this tournament and one of the reasons is that fact that their seasons have just started.
“We are more or less in the rebuilding stage of our National Programme and we would be exposing the locally-based players in the Parbo Beer Cup. This we believe is important to the development process of the game.”
The technical staff appointed for the competition is led by Head Coach Paul James who will be assisted by Bilaal Nantambu and Gavin Brown.
James in an invited comment disclosed that their main focus would be the defence and attacking areas.
Fitness he said should not be a problem since the players have been very active over the past months.
Technical Development Officer of the GFF Lyndon France, commenting on the team’s make up and its youthful look, said that the focus is on building a core unit as they look ahead to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the long term, the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the medium term and short term emphasis on tournaments the likes of the Parbo Beer Cup, International Friendly matches in the Caribbean.
The players called are:
Goalkeepers; Shemroy Arthur (Pele), Akeel Clarke (GDF), Richie Richards (Camptown). Defenders; Howard Lowe (Alpha), Quincy Madramootoo (Alpha), Devon Harris (GDF), Keon Bristol (Cougars), Keron Cameron (GDF), Trevis Henry (Monedderlust), Colin Nelson (Western Tigers), Tyson Carmichael (Rosignol), Reshawn Sandiford (Camptown).
Midfield; Travis Grant (Pele), Emerick Williams (Alpha), Philbert Moffatt (Alpha), Sceyon Hope (Camptown), Glenorvan Edmonds (Santos), Warren Gilkes (GDF), Dwayne Jacobs (Alpha), Dirk Archer (Pele).
Forwards; Edison Gomes (Alpha), Clive Andries (Buxton United), Peter Parks (GFC), Delroy Deen (B.V Triumph United), Adrian Adams (New Amsterdam United), Dwight Peters (Alpha).
