Enthusiasm, desire and raw talent was on display as the new crop of young players continued to capture the attention of the audience, on the second night of this year’s Woodpecker Products sponsored National Junior Squash Championships, which resumed Wednesday evening, at the Georgetown Club courts.
Fresh off his disappointing loss to Alexander Cheeks on the opening night, Patrick Fraser once again found himself involved in a “knock down drag out affair”, when he took on Travis Whitehead.
After sharing the early exchanges, Fraser won five consecutive points to take an 8-5 lead, before Whitehead regained service and went on a six-point run to claim the first set.
Fraser, however, regrouped well in the second to run away with that game.
Once again, Whitehead regained control as he took advantage of a tiring Fraser on his way an 8-3 lead, before the latter found a second wind and threatened to mount a comeback, but Whitehead managed to stay ahead and pulled through to take a 2-1 lead.
Presumably having flashbacks of his agonizing loss the previous night, Fraser dug deep to blow his opponent away in the fourth stanza and set up a highly anticipated final game.
The two youngsters didn’t disappoint, trading shots back and forth, they were deadlocked at 8-8, but it was Fraser who broke the tie and got to match point at 10-8, before eventually closing out the match much to his relief.
The tournament continues today, at the same venue.
