Trix Drink Mix U-17 to kick off next Saturday at GFC ground
By Franklin Wilson
Even with the Global Financial crunch still taking its toll on economies around the world, a number of corporate citizens in Guyana are still ensuring that the development of young people is not placed on the shelves.
One such entity is Bryden & Fernandes Inc. who yesterday made its debut by sponsoring the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Under-17 tournament under the ‘Trix Drink Mix’ Brand.
The competition, which will kick off next Saturday (May 30) at the Georgetown Football Club ground with a double-header, has attracted 12 teams with trophies at stake for the first to fourth placed teams, along with a number of individual prizes.
Making the announcement in the Boardroom of their 53 Water Street head office, was Marketing Coordinator Mark Kendall who said it was indeed a great pleasure to work with the GFA to assist in the development and promotion of association football.
“We applaud the association for creating such an opportunity to help the development of our young people and their communities. During the 10 weeks of competition we would like to see the teams showcase a good brand of football and excellent sportsmanship.”
For players to be eligible, they must have been born on or after January 1st 1992. Honourary Secretary of the GFA Marlan Cole noted that the association would be very strict with clubs who do not adhere to the required registration practices.
GFA Vice President Jason Benjamin in his remarks said he is positive that the efforts of Bryden & Fernandes Inc. would be emulated by many others.
“I am confident that the skills to be imparted through the medium of this football competition will greatly enhance our youths today and fill part of the void that lies open, like the gaping hole in the mouth of a volcano.
Football is a sport that preaches self discipline, team discipline, respect for self and others, team loyalty and a sense of identity and belonging. It encourages a spirit of patriotism which is so very absent from the society in which we live.”
Benjamin noted the trend of investing in our richest resource – that of our people – must be continued. He complimented Bryden & Fernandes for proving that it is a company which embraces and takes care of people who support it.
Delivering the vote of thanks was 2nd V.P of the GFA, Sampson Gilbert.
Battling in group ‘A’ will be Santos, Fruta Conquerors, Alpha United and Georgetown Football club. Group ‘B’ have Uprising, Pele, Riddim Squad and Flamingo and those in contention in group ‘C’, are Renaissance, Thomas United, Sunburst Camptown and Western Tigers. The top 2 teams in each group along with the best 2 third placed teams will advance to the knock out stage. Games will be of 70 minutes duration with the venues being Camptown and GFC grounds.
The parade and Tucville grounds will be used as alternate venues whenever the need arise.
The opening double header next Saturday will see Santos challenging Fruta Conquerors from 08:00hrs in a group ‘A’ clash with group ‘B’ teams, Uprising and Pele, squaring off in the 10 O’clock match, both at the GFC ground.
