Police yesterday shot a Stabroek Market vendor in the arm after the man allegedly attempted to escape from custody.
Twenty-five year-old Andre Allicock, of Lot 623 Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, was being arrested by two armed policemen under the suspicion that he had narcotics in his possession.
According to a police press release, Allicock was sitting in a chair at the market, with a plastic bag which allegedly contained 40 grams of marijuana.
A scuffle ensued between Allicock and one of the ranks as he made efforts to free himself. During the fracas the rank fired a shot and Allicock was hit. He was subsequently taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where doctors were trying to remove the bullet.
Allicock is presently being guarded at the hospital and is expected to be charged soon.
