The 2009 Tenelec Berbcie First Division 50-over cricket competition commenced last Sunday with three matches.
Albion, Scotsburg United and West Berbice registered victories with five-wicket hauls from Guyana’s left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, 5-31 and pacer Jermaine Reid 5-30.
National under-19 wicket-keeper Anthony Bramble (55) and Colin Duke (65) were the only batsmen to register half-centuries in the opening round.
Albion Community Centre posted a modest 138 off 38.5 overs against Upper Corentyne, Permaul took 5 for 31 from 8.5 overs which together with pacer Doodnauth Lallbeharry’s 4 for 24 from 7.3 overs, saw Upper Corentyne falling for a paltry 90 off 28 overs.
Albion’s victory was however, marred by the fact that Lallbeharry name was not on their declared list of players causing Upper Corentyne to play under protest.
The matter will be dealt with by the Competition Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Skeldon Community Centre’s pacer, Reid took 5 for 30 from 8 overs as Scotsburg United made 184 in 46 overs, with Anthony Bramble contributing 55 (5 fours). However, Scotsburg’s Essequibo left arm spinner Robert Moore took 4 for 15 from 8 overs to see Skeldon fall for 105 in reply.
