A suspect who has confessed to robbing cambio dealer, Ramesh Bhagoo, of $12M in jewellery claims that two policemen assisted him in the heist.
Police officials confirmed yesterday that the man, whom they have detained, positively identified a police constable as the person who drove the getaway car that picked up the gang near Le Repentir Cemetery after they made off with Bhagoo’s jewellery.
The policeman, who owns a dark-coloured car, was detained yesterday after investigators arranged a confrontation between him and the suspect.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect also said that another police constable, who was recently charged and interdicted from duty, accompanied him on the robbery. However, police officials said that they have been unable to locate the rank. The policeman and other ranks were recently interdicted on corruption transaction charges.
Bhagoo, who plies his trade on America Street, was robbed at gunpoint two Saturdays ago around 16:00 hours at the corner of Broad and Saffon Streets where he had stopped to collect a Mother’s Day gift for his mother. According to reports, the businessman was standing outside his vehicle when two men, who appeared to be drinking at a nearby shop, approached him with guns drawn. The men ordered Bhagoo to lie on the ground and then sped away with the man’s vehicle.
The men drove through Albouystown and eventually abandoned the Rav 4 in Le Repentir Cemetery near the Mandela Avenue dumpsite.
By the time police ranks arrived, the robbers had already fled with two bags, one of which contained the jewellery.
