The Director spoke of the benefits that could be derived by students from being involved in the event, adding that students could get exposure to the game, become physically fit, learn the rules of the game and learn life skills such as how to cope with success and failure.
Kumar promised that out of the current tournament he will instruct Munroe to select a group of outstanding players to participate in a special competition in August and this event will be sponsored by the Commission.
He also implored on the players to carry the same spirit into their secondary school career, pointing out that as far as he can see many of them seemed destined for Queen’s College.
“I would like to tell you that we’ve restarted after an absence of 24 years, an annual rivalry between Queen’s College and Berbice High School and I hope that many of you here will someday be able to make the team to engage Berbice,” Kumar said.
The Director further disclosed that he will advocate for sports to remain an active programme on the schools curriculum. He also recognised efforts the teachers are making to get the students prepared to come out and play good cricket.
