Dear Editor,
I would like to make some observations on the Evolution versus Intelligent Design debate.
I am not a religious fundamentalist and have no dogmas to defend. I believe that solid scientific evidence must be the basis for any doctrine or belief. I do not see science and spirituality (which is not a religion) as opposing fields of studies.
The aim of conventional science is to uncover the deepest facts around us and the aim of the science of spirituality, with participants around the globe including Guyana and the USA, is to search for the cause behind those facts or truths. They both adopt methods which include theory, experimentation and verification and are two sides of the same coin.
Although I recognise the valuable contribution that the theory of evolution has made in our understanding of mutation and its part in the evolutionary process involving bacteria and other organisms, I do not think it addresses the deeper questions of life – how creation and human life began on this planet. But does it really matter? We can reach the moon, but still cannot reach the heart of our neighbour.
I do not think that evolution or religion has proved its case for creation beyond a reasonable doubt. Whereas religion is largely based on faith, evolution does not close the deal on this topic.
According to the evolutionary theory, the process by which life began in the primordial soup, a process called abiogenesis – which is the doctrine that living matter can be produced by non-living matter – amino acids formed chains to become the first proteins and later evolved into the first simple living organisms.
My question is: How can chemicals suddenly decide to become alive?
And, if so, why would they have a will to continue, after many evolutionary twists and turns, to more complex life forms?
In my humble opinion, I think it would take a considerable leap of faith to believe this.
