Crane Rovers crowned Harvest Time Church soccer ‘Kings’

Crane Rovers captured the Harvest Time Church football title when they defeated Showtime by the lone goal of the contest last Sunday at the West Demerara Secondary School ground.

The match, an evenly contested affair throughout, as Crane Rovers took the lead through a free kick taken by their defender Keith Blackman in the 20th minute. The free kick was awarded after the Showtime keeper Alex Murray handled the ball outside of the goal area. The effort was powerfully struck and went around the wall set up by the opposition and eluded the goalkeeper.

Showtime pressed hard for the equaliser, but wasted several opportunities. The final whistle sounded with victory for Crane Rovers who walked away with the $160,000 cash prize and a beautiful trophy, donated by the Pastor of the Harvest Time Church, Joseph Persaud and his family.

Showtime took home the $80,000 second prize and a beautiful trophy presented by the Lucky Dollar Stores.

Den Amstel occupied 3rd place after defeating Goed Fortuin on penalty kicks, after a scoreless game in regulation and extra time. They took home $40,000 and a trophy.

The games were witnessed by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Human Services Priya Manickchand, Member of Parliament Rev. Kwame Gilbert and other functionaries.

The Harvest Time Church expressed thanks to the many sponsors who contributed to the success of the tournament, which included President Bharrat Jagdeo, Jailing Company, Rice Lab, Muneshwar’s, Linden Connolly, 2 J’s Hardware Store, the Persaud family of Eccles, The Lucky Dollar Stores and several others.
