Dear Editor,
Even though Guyana has relatively few government (The Peoples’ property) owned companies, the general public should pay keen attention to the Governance of these vital assets since they represent part of citizens’ wealth and must be managed to make a profit.
Recently, we have had the head of GPL (Mr. Ronald Alli) unceremoniously removed by President Bharrat Jagdeo. And this same gentleman was removed as Chairman of GuySuCo. The questions we must and should be asking are as follows:
1) Was it a sensible decision by the President or appropriate authority to appoint the same person to hold the Chairmanship of the two largest publicly owned companies? Why couldn’t someone else of repute be found for one of the two, rather than one person “hogging” both positions?
2) Analysts should probe the performance of both of these companies during Mr. Alli’s tenure to ascertain whether the performance of these two entities was poor, acceptable or good, based on various criteria suitable for Public Corporations.
This exercise would also serve the purpose of exposing the Government policies of jobs for the boys instead of the best man for the job.
We have seen recently that Karan Singh has been removed from office by the GWI Board.
There was a public uproar when he was re-appointed after a very contentious period during his first tenure, clearly he should not have been given a second opportunity but even the deaf/dumb and blind know that this was blatant dishing out of jobs to the PPP faithfuls. Congratulations to Cyril Solomon (Chairman of GWI) for doing what one of his predecessors Dr. Wilson could not/did not do, if my memory serves me correct that Board was packed with a number of Party stalwarts including Komal Chand who may have turned a blind eye to the Karan Singh machinations.
My Fellow Guyanese wake up and take a keen interest in the management of your property, remember it does not belong to the PPP or for that matter any political party.
I urge the powers to take note of this and ensure that we find the best people possible to run these State owned entities and give them clear mandates without too much political interference.
Lalbachan Mahadeo
