Dear Editor,
I am appalled by the turn of events at NCN following the death of Ayube Hamid, which resulted in the discontinuation of the ever popular radio programme – “Indian Memory Album”.
It is a travesty that NCN has been unable to find a host for a programme that has gained enormous popularity by its own merit.
One wonders…is it that the resource personnel is not available? Or is it that there are other considerations and influences that debar a person whom I know have the requisite skills and experiences to be the host of such a programme.
In fact I know that he did the same programme on a couple of occasions when Ayube Hamid was overseas. And those were the days when GBC was broadcasting from High Street.
Besides that, he hosted the Early Bird Show for a number of years and filled-in for Mr. Fazil Azeez (who was the General Manager) with programmes such as “Indian Melody Time” and “Oriental Fiesta”.
He is the current host of “Melodies of Love”. He seemed to have been widely read as far as Indian culture is concerned. He has a good radio voice that blends beautifully with his distinct pronunciation of Hindi words.
Ever so often he is given the task of covering most of the Indian events – Phagwah, Diwali, Pushpanjali, etc, etc.
Suffice it to say that these programmes lend credence to his ability to perform creditably. I rest my case for Jaideo Doodnauth and once again ask, “What’s the big fuss about?” I noted in a section of the media, Mazrul Bacchus is labeled a “radio producer”. I dare ask…producer of what?
I recalled that Mazrul Bacchus teamed up with one Imzan Hussain to produce a programme calleda “Aap ki Pharma Esh” (Your Choice). Bacchus had advocated that this programmme would have been cost-effective by recording same and put up for sale. I wonder if Mr Azeez or Mr Bacchus can tell us how many programmes were sold.
Mind you, the late Ayube Hamid had another programme running under the name “Your Choice”.
What a catastrophe?
This section of the media also reported that Bacchus was thought to be a “worthy replacement”…one who could “fill the void” left with the death of Ayube Hamid. Implicit in this reportage one gets the feeling that Bacchus alone fits the bill. And if this is so, I would like to know the results of the evaluation done by the committee headed by Dr Rovin Deodat.
Finally I would like to know if Bacchus had done a “demo-programmme”. Oswald Singh and Jaideo had done their’s.
What are you up to NCN?
