Keon Sealy and Devon Searles were both granted $25,000 bail each, yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, when they appeared to answer a charge of corrupting the police.
It was alleged that the two, on May 15, corruptly gave to police Sergeant Neville Smith the sum of $2,500 as an inducement to avoid a charge of breaching insurance. They pleaded not guilty and were unrepresented in court.
According to the defendants, the policeman stopped the minibus they were operating because it was overloaded.
They further explained that Sergeant Smith told them that he would drop the charges. “This policeman tell we that he would drop de charge against we if we give he $3000.”
They further explained that Smith got angry when they told him that they only had $2500.
However Police Prosecutor Seetaram refuted this claim and told the court that Sergeant Smith arrested the defendants for breaching insurance. He said that the defendants after being arrested tried to bribe the police. There was no objection to bail.
They are both expected to make another court appearance on June 15.
