–breaks meet record in the process
Aliann Pompey continued her astonishing season at the Rio Grand Prix in Brazil with her record breaking performance in the 400m yesterday in a time that placed the top national athlete among the ten leading performers this year.
Pompey completed the race in 51.45 seconds that was better than her 51.58 mark in 2004. Her winning time was the ninth fastest in the world and well under the 53.00 qualification mark required for the upcoming Caribbean Games.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport via email yesterday, the United States–based Pompey made it clear that she enjoys the track in Rio de Janeiro. The athlete was happy with the result of the race following her 2007 Pan Am disappointment.
“I love this meet; it’s very organised [and] the track is great. There are a lot of Brazilian athletes competing, so there are a lot of spectators. The meet organiser, Helio Mello has done a really good job,” Pompey said in the email.
“The last time I was here, it was in 2007, Pan Am Games, where I was sick and didn’t do well at all. I had that in my mind as I was preparing. It wasn’t really a redemption race,” she continued, adding that it cannot replace Pan Am.
Pompey indicated that if she could have traded the result, she would opt for a similar race at the Pan American Games. “It felt good regardless. There are [not] many faults you can find in a performance when you win a race,” she said.
The Guyanese campaigner said that she still has a lot of work to do this season while she has not competed much. Pompey is expected to compete again on Wednesday in another Brazilian district where she will run the 200m. (Edison Jefford)
