NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – The Gafoors Rose Hall Branch came to the assistance of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School with the donation of a quantity of industrial arts tools for the mechanical engineering and electrical technology department, last week.
Head of the Industrial Arts Department, Denise McCurdy indicated that the pieces of equipment carry a price tag of some $200,000.
The institution, she said, was in dire need of the tools and as a result, those students doing the school based assessment were affected.
The items were delivered a few days after the institution’s administration approached the company.
Ms. McCurdy lauded the company for their benevolence and quick response.
“With the necessary tools available, more students would be attracted to the technology stream. On behalf of the Head Teacher, Ms. Jackie Benn, the Board of Directors, teachers and students, especially those of the Industrial Arts Department we would like to express our gratitude to the Management and Staff of the Gafoors Rose Hall Branch.”
She noted that traditionally, students from that department branched off into areas of mechanical engineering, technical drawing, building technology and electrical technology.
According to her, these types of craftsmen are much needed across the country.
Manager of the Gafoors Rose Hall Branch, Wayne Foster, said that it was important for his organisation to get involved since many graduate from the university in the field of business but in terms of technology, it is difficult to find such persons.
“If we want to change things in society we must start from the school. Through the education system we have to mould the students in order for us to have technically trained people. Many persons would not know what jobs are available so we decided to expose the students by allowing them to visit our factory at Land of Canaan.”
He is hoping that other companies would get on board.
