The police are investigating the murder of a 39-year-old man who was reportedly stabbed to death on Saturday night over a gambling dispute.
According to reports, Redwin Europe alias “Boojie” of Patentia Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, was dealt a single stab wound to the back at about 19:05 hrs at the Wales Community Centre Ground.
A police press release stated that Europe, who fathered ten children, was gambling with another man when an argument developed over money.
The suspect reportedly went away and returned with a knife with which he is alleged to have stabbed Europe before escaping.
Europe’s reputed wife, Desiree Brummel, told this newspaper that she and Europe had attended a fair at the Wales Community Centre on Saturday.
She added that while there, Europe was gambling. According to Brummel, Europe and the suspect bet 500 each and her husband won the game.
Shortly after, the suspect grabbed the money and pushed Europe. “He (Europe) hold on pon de boy hand and tek he money and they had a lil scrambling.”
She also said that the suspect then went away and returned with a knife with which he stabbed Europe.
Brummel noted that at the time of the stabbing, Europe was sitting on an old fridge.
“My neighbour run and call me and tell me watch your husband get stab – when I go I see he lie down in a pool a blood.”
Brummel said that public-spirited persons tied the gaping wound and she hurried to get a taxi to take him to the hospital.
Europe was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
After the stabbing, Brummel added, some boys chased after the suspect who managed to escape into some bushes through a hole in the fence at the Community Centre.
Brummel also told Kaieteur News that Europe worked in the interior and was scheduled to travel there today. “His bags were already packed,” she noted.
The couple’s neighbour, Felecia Gilgeous, said that while at the Community Centre she saw Europe sitting on the fridge and decided to go over and say hello.
According to her, on the way over, she saw a hand reaching out to Europe’s left side. Shortly after, Gilgeous added, she saw Europe grab his side then got up after which blood starting spilling out and he collapsed.
Up to press time, the suspect had not been apprehended. However, the police have recovered the knife, which they suspect was used in the attack.
