The Ministry of Health will continue to monitor the operation of local laboratories with the aim of ensuring that they comply with the GYS170 Standard, says Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy.
The Minister earlier this year had set a March 31 deadline for compliance even as he pointed out that “I want to say unequivocally that we will not be tolerating any of those laboratories that have not started the process of being licensed under the GYS170.”
“That is the law and when it comes to the law I am not merely strongly advocating it is the legal requirement…,” the Minister had pointed out.
In an invited comment on the progress of the process, Minister Ramsammy disclosed that officials from the Health Ministry Standards Department have been inspecting laboratories.
He pointed to the fact that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is one of the entities that has complied with the standard but noted that he would have to consult with his staff to determine how many others have.
Based on information from the Guyana National Bureau of Standard (GNBS), laboratories certified to the GYS170 standard include Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital Laboratory, Eureka Medical Laboratory, Sigma Lab and the GPHC.
The standard, which was established by the GNBS, creates the basis on which laboratories are registered and licensed, the Minister had disclosed.
As such, he had warned that if the owners and operators of laboratories fail to comply and have not at least started the process, they must also prepare to close their doors.
According to the GNBS, it is recognising laboratories as Level One, Level Two or Level Three based on the minimum criteria established.
Level Three will be recognised as Class A, Level Two as Class B and Level One as Class C. GNBS has stated that the requirements of the GYS 170 standard for the operation of a laboratory will determine which level of certification will be granted.
In order to garner Level One certification, laboratories must be able to provide evidence that they confirm to the basic requirement for operation. As such, it must have policies and procedures for management, technical and basic safety requirements.
To acquire Level Two certification, laboratories must provide evidence that they have a basic laboratory management system meeting the requisite requirements for this category in addition to what is required for the Level One Certification.
According to the GNBS, the laboratory granted with Level Three certification, must provide evidence that it has a quality system meeting all the requirements of the GYS 170 standard, which is characteristic of general standards for the operation of a laboratory.
