Camptown’s Jason Williams and Renaissance’s Jermaine Beckles each netted a hat-trick of goals to lead their teams to emphatic wins as play in this year’s Courts Pee-Wee Under-11 Football Competition opened yesterday, at Thirst Park.
Williams’ goals came in the 17, 22 and 24 minutes to propel his team to a comfortable 4-0 win over Thomas United. The other goal came off the boots of Jaleel Ferreira, who netted in the 29th minute.
Renaissance’s Beckles efforts came in the 6, 13 and 19th minutes in their 4-0 drubbing of Marian Academy. Keron Tasher’s strike in the 9th minute completed their tally.
In other results: Uprising beat Buxton United 3-0 with Travis Lyken (20), Quacy McKay (32) and Saki Phillips (35), being the goal-scorers, while defending champions Fruta Conquerors lost to Santos 2-0 with Kelsey Benjamin (5th) and Selah Rogers (7th), the players on target.
Meanwhile, Courts (Guyana) Inc. Purchasing Director Clyde DeHaas and Guyana Football Association General Secretary Marlan Cole met the teams before the start of play and kicked-off the ball to signal the commencement of the tournament.
He said that his organisation is always supportive of projects that promote youth development and since he believes that the youngsters represented the future of the sport, he had no problem in acquiescing to the request. “Courts’ motto is adding value every day and our input is merely adding value to the lives of young people,” De Haas said.
He also pointed out that Courts has sponsored last year’s tournament and plans to continue support for many years to come. “We are in for the long haul,” de Haas assured.
The footballers would be in action each weekend, for the next two months with four matches being played each day.
