Demerara wicketkeeper Joseph Perry missed his maiden first division century by six runs, while left-arm spinner Damien Vantull and Oslyn Batson grabbed five-wicket hauls yesterday, on the opening day of fourth round matches in the Cellink Plus two-day first division cricket competition in the City.
Vantull, a 20-year old Berbician left-arm spinner who has his sights on a Demerara senior team selection, took 6-68 for Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) but his team finished the day struggling in their own backyard against GINC having already conceded first innings points.
The 20-year-old Perry ran out of partners and finished unbeaten on 94 for Everest against GDF at Everest, while Batson’s 5-50 put Transport Sports Club (TSC) in a good position to take first innings points from Police at DCC.
At MSC, GNIC fell for 197 and then dismissed the host for 63, as only Randy Lindore (15) reached double figures. Following-on, MSC, 134 runs behind, were 47-1 when bad light stopped play at 17:44hrs.
Collis Butts (30) Victor Rodrigues (29), West Indies selector and former test off-spinner Clyde Butts (26), ex-first-class pacer Rayon Griffith (24) and Demerara under-19 opener Quincy Ovid Richardson (23) all failed to build on good starts for GNIC, as Vantull continued his impressive showing in Demerara’s cricket. MSC put down eight catches.
The strong MSC top order of Imran Hussan, Shemroy Barrington, Steven Jacobs and Deon Ferrier were quickly blown away on a sluggish track as pacers Wayne Blande (4-17) and Griffith (3-4) made early inroads into the batting. Clyde Butts, who turns 52 on July 8, then grabbed 2-14 to complete the demolition job for GNIC who enforced the follow-on with 15 overs left in the day’s play.
After Hassan (5) was caught behind off Griffith at 15-1, the first-class pair of Barrington (25) and Jacobs (16) took MSC to within 93 runs of making GNIC bat again when bad light stopped play after nine overs in the innings were bowled.
At Everest, Perry got support from former National under-19 Skipper Sauid Drepaul (70) and Avinash Dookie (32) as the Camp Road side made 255.
Left-arm spinner Clinton Collins (4-49) and left-arm pacer Travis Gilbert (2-46) were the main wicket-takers for the Soldiers who finished the day on 78-2, still 177 runs away from first innings points. Sherwin McCalmond (23) and Paul Castello (20) were the not out batsmen.
At DCC, Rawle Browne (55) and Regan Rodrigues (32) got little support from the other batsmen as Police made 180 all out with Batson (5-50) and Kevin Ross (2-49) doing the damage with the ball for TSC who reached 124-3 by the close.
Chandra Persaud (34*) and Wazeer Mohamed (32*) were the unbeaten batsmen after Steven Alves was removed for 19.
Demerara under-19 off-spinner Ricardo Devers, Dexter Southwell and Vishal Jaigobin have taken the wickets to fall so far.
The GT&T ‘Bowling for free minutes’ competition will continue today at the MSC ground during the Lunch and Tea intervals. Today is the final day and play in all of the matches is scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
