–Two Final Four spots up for grabs
Flashback! From left, Devon Bacchus, Kester Gomes and Kevin Lawrence pose for Kaieteur Sport after their first round win.
The heat is on and with dollars one game away, the last four teams in the HJTV and Lens Craft Inter-Ward basketball championships will be decided tonight when the quarter-final playoffs continues at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
South Ruimveldt are down to play Kitty/Campbellville as Alberttown/Bourda gear for the biggest challenge of the tournament against favourites, Wortmanville/Werk–en–rust. The best ‘game’ will be displayed in winning efforts.
Sherwin Roberts has already displayed an aspect of his game that is likely to be a key fact for Kitty in the contest. Roberts has a deadly jumper and is likely to be closely guarded in an effort to stymie that lethal parameter shot.
Guest player from Linden, Steve Neils Jr. has not kicked into major offence but it is only a matter of time before the guard let loose. He is a major offensive player and will surely be aiming to take his team to the Final Four.
In addition, South has the sleeper Dane Kendal at the bottom. The ‘big man’ is not a main presence on the court but his stats are usually major at the end of his games. Though he is mainly for defensive purposes Kendal scores big.
The game will definitely not be a walk in the park for South since Kitty shopped national centre from Linden, Jason Alonzo. The major defensive player joins forces with forwards Kester Gomes, Kevin Lawrence and Devon Bacchus.
Gomes also shoots the ball at high three–point percentage but not with the potency of his rival, Roberts. The All-star player and former dunk champion also has a complete inside game that he will exploit in the marquee contest. Bacchus is a hustler and has the support and confidence of Gomes. He is not a tidy player but he gets the garbage points from second attempts. Lawrence is the leader on the team that is looking for a definite competitive resurgence.
Alberttown/Bourda have to prove that their win against Tucville last Thursday was no fluke against one of the best teams in the tournament, Wortmanville. Once they do that then the team is definitely made of championship goods.
The winner of the championship takes home $500,000 while second and third places get $300,000 and $100,000 respectively. Fourth place will receive $50,000 as all the teams in the Final Four are to receive prize monies. (Edison Jefford)
