Even as some have opined that there is a growing demand for forensic analysis to be used to solve crime in the Caribbean it was among the core subjects addressed at the just concluded ACCP.
Commissioner of Police of the Barbados Police Force, Darwin Dottin, said that Caribbean people expect their police forces to solve violent crimes that involves forensics said there is need for improved use of the technology.
He added that there are several forensic laboratories in the region, however the general consensus is that the best use is not being made of them and out of the conference discussions there will be some rationalising of the use of the laboratories.
Commissioner Dottin said as a result of a prior meeting, the region’s police forces have formed a working group to rationalise and bring forward proposals on how they will move forward on making the best use of the available forensic labs.
Dottin said that some progress was noted and it was greed that some steps identified will have to be taken to ensure that police forces in the region are given greater support with the use of forensic technology.
Caribbean Commissioners of Police and their counterparts from the French Antilles, British Virgin Islands and Suriname, on Thursday concluded their 24th annual conference with a pledge to protect national interests that are susceptible to criminal activities.
The conference held at the Savannah Suite, Pegasus, was not confine to deliberation from only the regions top cops, but also featured presentations from a number of stakeholders, including non-governmental organisations, security and other social experts.
The conference enabled commissioners to share best practice ideas and Dottin said that some of the programmes that worked in individual countries will possible be used across the region.
