The official launch of the GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song Competition will take place at the Duke’s Lodge, Kingston on Tuesday. From all indications, the launch promises to be a smashing event, with exciting features.
Up for grabs are a motorcar, fantastic cash prizes, cell phones, ipods and lots of other breathtaking offers.
After a two-year hiatus the much-anticipated event has returned much to the delight of many Guyanese.
While the event was not staged last year because of Guyana’s involvement in Carifesta X, and later, the Christmas festivities, this year’s competition promises ‘glitzy auditions’,
and a massive campaign to provide exposure for talented local artistes. It is also intended to serve as GT&T’s positive contribution to the local music industry.
Under the theme ‘Caribbean Music, Guyanese Vybz’, the competition will see auditions being hosted in Essequibo, Linden, Georgetown and Berbice and from all indications will blaze a ‘Blue Power Trail’ never experienced before.
This year around GT&T has taken things a notch higher since the first place winner will take home a Toyota VIOS (Blue) motorcar, a one-year endorsement contract with GT&T, complimentary recording of a single (song), an Apple IPOD Touch, a Samsung Bluetooth Headset and a cellular phone.
The second place winner will receive $500,000, a one-year endorsement contract with GT&T, an Apple IPOD Touch and a cellular phone. The third place contestant will take home $250, 000, an Apple IPOD Touch and of course, a cellular phone.
The initial audition is to decide whether contestants can actually sing. The actual showdown will see three finalists coming up in a clash for the 2K9 title.
Contestants will be required to perform a song of their choice at this stage (not an original).
After the countrywide auditions are concluded 25 persons will be short-listed for the quarterfinals. The GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song Competition will be aired every Thursday night on NCN, and HJTV.
The first quarterfinal segment will be hosted at the Theatre Guild, Kingston, Georgetown, and tickets will be sold for every phase of the competition.
While the contestants are required to perform the jingle in front of a panel of judges, the song they are to perform will be selected according to the theme of the night which are all geared at promoting and marketing the Caribbean’s potentials during the competition.
The judges selected for the competition are Sean Bhola, Oliver Basdeo and gospel songstress, Cheryl Maloney.
Fifteen individuals will move forward to the semifinals and all the previous scores will be erased at this point. They will perform the same jingle and sing a song based on the Caribbean theme selected for the night in question. At time point eliminations will see only 10 persons being selected for the final segment.
The action really begins at this point since contestants will be made to compose and record an original song. They will record their entry at a selected recording studio, compliments of GT&T. Both their song and jingle will be given exclusive radio air time for the public to vote for their choice of winners.
The public votes and judges scores will eventually determine the final three that will face off at the National Park. However, this segment will be staged in the form of a massive entertainment feature showcasing several of Guyana’s top local artistes and entertainers.
At each phase the contestants will each be tasked with a community project. The first round of auditions will kick off in Georgetown from June 5 while the second round begins in Berbice on June 14.
June 19 is the date set for auditions in Berbice while the Linden auditions will be stage on June 21.
The corporate sponsors for this event are Ansa McAl (Carib), Beharry Automotive Ltd, NCN, HJTV and Impressions.
