In a game defined by glorious, as well as controversial moments, Fruta Conquerors, through a 51st minute success off the boot of Vurlon Mills triumphed, when they faced Pele FC in the Guyana Football Association’s (GFA) Cellink Plus 2009 Premier League championship, at the Tucville Ground last Friday evening. The win represents the second for the winning team from three matches.
The Guyana Defence Force, still smarting from the 2-nil defeat to the Cougars FC, put up an improved performance against the Georgetown Football Club (GFC), securing victory by a 6-nil margin.
Desford Williams opened the Army’s account in the 20th minute. Hubert Pedro then registered a hat-trick in the 24th, 35th, and 39th minutes before Devon Harris joined the party with a 43rd minute strike. Marlon Benjamin polished off things with an 85th minute effort.
Pele and Fruta Conquerors started the game at a heated pace with both teams enjoying favourable ball possession. In the early stages of the encounter, Travis Grant received a sweet offering and sprinted to the opposition’s goal. In the end, his tame conversion was effortlessly scooped up by the Fruta custodian, Oswald Cornette, thus denying the midfielder. The sides battled through the first segment scoreless.
The echo of the whistle to signal the start of the second half had barely subsided when Manasseh Primo launched an attack. His powerful shot from the right wing had goal written all over it but for the absence of any of his teammates to complete the conversion.
Undaunted, Mills launched another attack and this time the effort paid off when the ball shot past Shemroy Arthur’s outstretched hand and settled at the back of the net.
Pele’s strikers launched another attack and had almost succeeded, but for the astuteness of the Conqueror’s goalie. He miraculously plucked the ball out of the air preventing what was undoubtedly the best effort witnessed all night.
Pele’s star striker, Gerald Whittington had on several occasions rescued his team when in dire straits. As the time whittled down, he collected a pass on the left wing and raced to the opposition’s goal. His unerring pass found the boot of Travis Grant who duly punched it past the Conquerors’ custodian.
The goal was, however, disallowed after the referee ruled that Grant was off side.
The referee’s decision also caused some controversy with the Pele coach, Denzil ‘Hunky Brains’ Thompson vociferously denouncing the decision while threatening to call off his team. Instead, he made several changes in an effort to change their fortunes.
Troy Kellman replaced Calvin Shepherd and a few minutes later, Sheldon Holder took over from Okeni Fraser, all to no avail.
With their team enjoying a 1-0 advantage and with the minutes quickly evaporating, the Conquerors’ footballers engaged in time wasting tactics. Pele continued in attacking mode and almost succeeded, but were denied by the waiting hands of the Conquerors’ custodian. Shortly afterwards the shrill sound of the whistle sealed Pele’s fate.
The tournament continues tonight at the same venue with BK Western Tigers up against their village counterparts, Flamingo, while Camptown face-off with Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United. Kick off time is 18:00hrs.
