Even though there are still some two months duration before Emancipation observances kick in, the Bagotville Cultural Circle is already jump starting their festivities as they aim to ignite an explosive Emancipation package for the village.
Starting Sunday, July 26, the celebration kicks off with a massive joint church service followed by the symposium on Emancipation slated for July 27. On July 28 the organisers host the Historical Reflection on Folksongs and Skits, which will make way for the Night of Spirituals on July 29.
On July 30, a drumming session will be staged in the village while on July 31 the organisation will march through the village to Tamarind Tree, then back to the Bagotville Community Centre.
On this date the Apostolic Service will take place at 21:00 hrs, followed by drumming and cultural items at 22:00 hrs. At 22:30 hrs the Talk of Emancipation will begin.
At 23:00 hrs preparations begin for the grand procession to the koker for libation.
After that the procession returns to the community center for continued drumming and more cultural entertainment.
On August 1, the village congregates for an explosive Day of Sports, cross-country races, athletics, cycle races, swimming, buns eating, lime and spoon and greasy pole competitions.
These activities will take place at the community center ground square while lunch and distribution of hampers to senior citizens will follow after.
There is also a segment reserved for presentation of prizes from the various competitive games and races.
The Bagotville Cultural Circle was formed several years ago and was founded by the now deceased Jake Croker.
Initially, the group was called ‘Egbe Afrugu Bin’, meaning ‘An African Way’ but was later given its present name after the election of new office bearers.
The new office bearers include the Chairperson – Ashton Crawford, Secretary – Shirley Osborne, Liaison Officers – Hazel Wilson and Dexter Crawford, Treasurer – Joan Richards and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer- Ingrid Peters.
Only these persons are permitted to uplift or collect cash or kind on behalf of the organisation. (Alex Wayne)
