The Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) continues its month-long anniversary celebration activities with an exhibition in front of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) this morning starting at 11:00hrs.
Some of the country’s top lifters would be on show as executives of the GAWA attempt to popularize the sport. Activities continue tomorrow morning with an interactive session to be held at Olympic House, 306 Church and Peter Rose Streets, beginning at 12:00hrs.
Executives would discuss sports injuries and preventative as well as treatment techniques. Thereafter, the strongmen take their activities to the Seawall Tarmac at around 17:00hrs, where the nation’s best lifters would engage in an exhibition.
The Association is observing its 69th anniversary and already representatives have attended several television programmes to discuss issues relevant to the sport. Secretary of the GAWA, Deion Nurse said that the response of the public so far has been heartening.
He said that the sport has experienced some successes over the years, the most recent being Sean Cozier’s triple bronze medal feat in Puerto Rico, last year. Cozier had eclipsed Bhojnarine Persaud’s 2007 4th place finish in the very competition in 2007.
The GAWA will culminate its activities on Sunday May 31 with the National Junior Championship at the Blairmont Community Centre, West Berbice.
Executives are encouraging the general public to support the activities, since admission to all events is free.
